Ron Paul Tosses Hat into Presidential Ring

Texas Congressman Ron Paul is making his third run for President.

Texas Congressman Ron Paul, a favorite of the of the Libertarian wing of the Tea Party, has made it official.  He’s running for President .  Monday, he told Sean Hannity of Fox News that his message has resonated with young people, “as it should” and they have helped spread his message far and wide.

With the addition of Congressman Paul in the race, there are now two Libertarians running for the Republican nomination in 2012.  Former New Mexico Governor, Gary Johnson, joined the race last week.  The two have very similar views, except for abortion.

As a physician, Dr. Paul  is opposed to abortion, whereas former Gov. Johnson supports a woman’s right to have an abortion.

Both Paul and Johnson, a relative unknown, were big hits amongst the Liberty crowd at CPAC.  Paul remains popular among many at Tea Party rallies.  Its hard to attend a tea party meeting or rally without seeing home made signs supporting the Congressman and his policies.

Tuesday, Fox News reported that in 2008, Paul was relegated to the bottom of the  contenders, due to his stance against U.S. involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan.  It turned out not to matter anyway, as the Independent voters,  who not a member of any party and who are allowed to vote in Republican primaries would up choosing the GOP nominee.  Senator John McCain lost to President Barack Obama.

Paul has run for the Presidency on two previous occasions, and in 1988 he ran on the Libertarian ticket.  In 2008, he ran as a Republican.

The American Spectator blog, speculating that both candidates might enter the race, wrote last December:

If Paul and Johnson both run, it will spilt the already limited Republican vote for their ideas at a time when Paul’s support might be reaching critical mass. While it may seem to be logical to just look at their combined vote totals when assessing GOP support for anti-statism or non-interventionism, a top three finish by Paul in Iowa or New Hampshire would have more impact than looking at a significant Paul-Johnson combined vote.

In other news, Tuesday, Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour told reporters that he would not be  entering the race.

One Response to “Ron Paul Tosses Hat into Presidential Ring”

  • During his recent NCSU speech, Rep. Ron Paul at times rambled and seemed disconnected and unfocused. He took no questions. At one point, after he said some gibberish that seemed to be made up of fragments of multiple talking points, I turned to the person next to me and whispered, “huh?” He whispered back, “Alzheimer’s?”
