CPAC 2011: Rand Paul
Senator Dr. Rand Paul (KY) was greeted enthusiastically by the libertarians in the crowd, who chanted “End the Fed! End the Fed! End the Fed!” when he arrived on stage. Paul seemed to think his supporters in the audience represent the Tea Party in general, not just the libertarians, when he thanked the Tea Partiers in the audience for his welcome.
Dr. Paul’s platform is based on eliminating income taxes and replacing it with a consumption (i.e. “Fair”) tax. It’s also based on getting the Federal Government out of Kentucky as much as possible, on reducing the debt, and on auditing the Federal Reserve.
Paul praised Barry Goldwater’s “The Conscience of a Conservative” and read several great passages from it.
Paul condemned government’s interpretation of the Commerce Clause. He joked that Nancy Pelosi “looked like a deer in the headlights” when someone questioned her about the constitutionality of Obamacare. He slammed NC Senator Kay Hagan for saying the Commerce Clause allows the Federal Government to mandate what you can eat.
Paul positioned himself as a champion of the US Constitution: “America’s greatness and exceptionalism are because we chose economic and political freedom. We are not inherently exceptional. We are exceptional because we chose freedom and we chose to protect that freedom from tyranny with the Constitution.”
Dr. Paul wants to drastically cut government spending and eliminate useless government agencies, a goal all Conservatives can and should support.
