Special Election for NC Court of Appeals Doubtful
The North Carolina FreeEnterprise Foundation (NCFEF) is reporting today that there may be a special election coming for an open seat on the N.C. Court of Appeals (COA).
NC COA Judge James A. Wynn, Jr. was confirmed, last week, to the United States Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals.
The NCFEF website reported:
If Judge Wynn resigns his seat on the North Carolina Court of Appeals before September 4th, the State Board of Elections will be required to open a special week-long filing period for the vacant seat. If the resignation comes on or after September 4th, Governor (Beverly) Perdue can appoint a replacement to the North Court of Appeals until an election can take place in 2012.
Your blogger feels that, as a “good Democrat”, Wynn will probably wait and resign after September 4th, so that Perdue can appoint someone. When the appointee has to face voters in two years, he/she can tout their “experience”.
Look for that person to be liberal, and most likely a minority woman. Since the Democrat North Carolina General Assembly made judicial races officially “non-partisan” a decade or so ago, the Republican advantage on the Courts have dwindled.
During the Clinton administration, NC voters decided they wanted more “law and order” and voted for such candidates, usually with the letter “R” by their names. Republican women were especially doing well.
Since elections are now non-partisan, voters have trended to look for someone “caring”. That usually means women and in the last election, all male Republican judges faced female Democrat oppostion.
Wynn is no fool and will try to continue this trend. Your blogger wonders if Perdue might choose another of her New Bern cronies for this post.
Editor’s Note: The fun thing about sharing the “adopted” hometown of the Governor and having known her for years, is knowing all the people who get into trouble.
